The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency was created in 1958 after Sputnik to prevent technological surprise. It funded ARPANET, the direct ancestor of the internet, along with GPS, stealth technology, and modern drone warfare foundations. Documented surveillance-adjacent programs include the Total Information Awareness office, defunded by Congress in 2003 after public outcry over its planned mass data-mining of civilians, and LifeLog, a project to record a person’s entire existence, cancelled in 2004 days before Facebook launched.
